Paediatricd and Neonatology Department

rlmc

Pediatrics department at RLKU Medical College’s attached hospitals (Hameed Latif Teaching Hospital and Hameed Latif Hospital) provides consultant-led care for newborns, infants, children, and adolescents across outpatient clinics, 24/7 emergencies, inpatient wards, and day-care. Services include neonatal care (with delivery-room support and neonatal resuscitation), management of common and complex childhood illnesses, growth and development assessment, immunization services, nutrition and lactation support, and coordination with subspecialty clinics (e.g., cardiology, neurology, nephrology, pulmonology, gastroenterology, endocrinology). Care pathways embed triage, sepsis and respiratory protocols, safe medication use, infection-prevention practices, antimicrobial stewardship, and regular audits/M&M meetings. Multidisciplinary input from Radiology, Pathology, Pharmacy, Physiotherapy, and Dietetics supports timely, family-centred care.
As a teaching unit, the department aligns with the UHS curriculum and mapped outcomes. Students develop competencies in pediatric history-taking and age-appropriate examination, growth charting, developmental screening, fluid–electrolyte and nutrition principles, rational investigations (CBC, electrolytes, CRP, chest X-ray), and initial management of common emergencies (asthma/wheeze, dehydration, febrile seizures, sepsis). Learning occurs on ward rounds and clinics, in emergency exposure under supervision, CPCs/case discussions, and Skills Lab sessions covering neonatal resuscitation, IMNCI approach, oxygen therapy, IV access, drug/IV fluid calculations, and vaccine counselling. Assessment uses workplace-based tools (DOPS/mini-CEX), OSCEs, case presentations, logbooks, and structured feedback with remediation. A mentorship culture encourages questions, audit/research participation, and professional guidance toward suitable training opportunities.
