RLKU’s Department of General Medicine comprises a 75-bed Division of Internal Medicine with subspecialty divisions in Cardiology, Pulmonology, Nephrology, Neurology, and Gastroenterology. Services run across Hameed Latif Teaching Hospital and Hameed Latif Hospital, with outpatient clinics at both sites and seamless linkage to two medical ICUs. Facilities include a CCU, Cath lab, echocardiography, ECG stress testing, video gastroscopy and colonoscopy, bronchoscopy, pulmonary function testing, and in-house hemodialysis with comprehensive nephrology support. Care is delivered by consultant-led teams using standardized pathways, robust infection-prevention and antimicrobial-stewardship practices, and integrated diagnostics for timely, safe, and patient-centered outcomes.
As a teaching unit, the department offers structured, bedside-focused learning aligned with the UHS curriculum and mapped outcomes. A dedicated faculty—supported by an in-house “training-the-trainers” program—uses modern teaching and assessment tools: supervised rounds and clinics, case-based discussions, CPCs, skills-lab sessions (e.g., IV access, ABG sampling, safe oxygen therapy), and workplace-based assessments (DOPS/mini-CEX), OSCEs, and logbooks. The culture is student-friendly and mentorship-driven: learners are encouraged to ask questions, engage in audit/research, and provide routine feedback that informs continuous improvement. Faculty provide academic guidance, professional counseling, and active support for graduates seeking suitable training opportunities within Pakistan and abroad.
