At RLKU Medical College’s attached hospitals—HLTH and HLH—Ophthalmology provides consultant-led eye care across OPD, emergency, day-care, and theatres. Services span routine to advanced care with full diagnostics (refraction, slit-lamp, tonometry, gonioscopy, indirect ophthalmoscopy, visual fields, A/B-scan, OCT, fundus imaging) and treatment for cataract, glaucoma, diabetic retinopathy, pediatric/strabismus, macular disease, and retinal pathologies, including intravitreal and laser options where indicated. The unit operates to sterilization and infection-prevention SOPs with audit/M&M oversight to ensure safe, timely outcomes.
As a teaching unit, the department aligns with the UHS curriculum and mapped outcomes. Students learn focused ocular history and exam, visual-acuity testing, pupil responses, motility and cover tests, fluorescein staining, basic tonometry, and fundoscopy. Clinical exposure includes triage of red/painful eye and trauma, OPD/OT observership, and case-based discussions (cataract, refractive error, glaucoma, diabetic eye disease, infections). Skills-lab coverage: chemical-injury irrigation, lid eversion, protective shield application, and referral criteria. Assessment uses OSCEs, DOPS/mini-CEX, case presentations, logbooks, and structured feedback.
