At RLKU Medical College and Affiliated HLTH and HLH Teaching Hospital, department of General Surgery provides round-the-clock, consultant-led care across outpatient clinics, emergency cover, elective and urgent theatres, and day-care procedures.
The service covers the full scope of contemporary general surgery across outpatient, inpatient, day-care, endoscopy, and emergency settings, delivered through consultant-led teams with standardized peri-operative pathways and ICU/HDU support. supported by modern operating rooms, image-guided interventions, endoscopy, and ICU/HDU backup. Standardized peri-operative pathways—pre-assessment, enhanced recovery, infection prevention, analgesia/VTE prophylaxis—and the WHO Surgical Safety Checklist are embedded. Quality is monitored through morbidity & mortality reviews, surgical audits, antimicrobial stewardship, and close collaboration with Anesthesia, Radiology, and Pathology.
As a teaching unit, the department aligns with the UHS curriculum and focuses on work-ready competencies. Students learn focused history and examination, consent and ethics, asepsis and OT etiquette, fluid–electrolyte and nutrition basics, antimicrobial use, wound care and drains, suturing and knot-tying, and initial trauma/emergency management. Learning occurs on ward rounds and clinics, in OT observership/assisting under supervision, skills-lab sessions (instrument handling, sutures, simulated scenarios), and case-based discussions with Radiology/Pathology for clinico-diagnostic correlation. Assessment includes MCQs/SAQs, case presentations, DOPS/mini-CEX, logbooks, and OSCEs with feedback and remediation. The department’s dual mandate—safe patient care and structured training—builds early surgical competence, professionalism, and lifelong learning habits.
