At RLKU Medical College’s attached hospitals—HLTH and HLH—ENT delivers consultant-led care across OPD, emergency, day-care, and operating theatres, with endoscopy and audiology support. The service covers ear, nose, throat, head & neck, and airway work: middle-ear and mastoid surgery; nasal/septal and sinus procedures (including FESS and fracture reduction); tonsil/adenoid surgery; microlaryngeal and endoscopic airway procedures; foreign-body removal (ear/nose/throat/esophagus/bronchus); and head-and-neck operations (lymph-node/thyroid-related, salivary gland, branchial/thyroglossal/dermoid, parotid—superficial), alongside trauma and laceration repair. Peri-operative pathways use standardized consent, WHO Surgical Safety Checklist, infection-prevention practices, analgesia/antibiotic stewardship, and M&M/audit for quality improvement. Multidisciplinary links with Anesthesia, Pulmonology, Pediatrics, Radiology, Pathology, ICU/HDU, and Speech & Swallow therapy support comprehensive care. As a teaching unit, the department aligns with the UHS curriculum and mapped outcomes. Students learn focused ENT history; otoscopy, tuning-fork tests, and basic audiology concepts; anterior rhinoscopy and epistaxis control (pressure, packing); oropharyngeal exam; indications for laryngoscopy, bronchoscopy, and esophagoscopy; acute airway assessment, tracheostomy care, and foreign-body principles; and postoperative wound and drain care. Learning occurs in clinics, emergency exposure, endoscopy/theatre observership (assisting under supervision), case-based discussions, and skills-lab sessions (ear exam, nasal packing, basic suturing, airway drills). Assessment uses OSCEs, DOPS/mini-CEX, case presentations, logbooks, and structured feedback—with a mentorship culture that encourages questions, audit/research participation, and professional development.
