Different countries have different legal systems, which broadly divide into two areas – criminal and civil. The systems have generally evolved over many years or centuries and are influenced by a wide variety of factors including culture, religion, and politics. By and large, the rules have been established over many hundreds of years and are generally accepted because they are for the mutual benefit of the population – they are the framework that prevents anarchy. However, to make sure that the laws are enforced fairly and correctly, the medico-legal system plays the most important part. When a crime is committed, the police must investigate the incident and gather evidence, a big part of which is scientific evidence which is then submitted to the court so that it can determine whether the accused person has committed the crime. The members of medical, healthcare, and scientific professions are bound by the same laws as the population, but they are also bound by additional responsibilities specific to the area of gathering the medicolegal evidence via examination of victims, perpetrators. The training of future doctors on national and international standards is needed to ensure that evidence, both medical and scientific, that is placed before the court, is established, credible, and recognized.
