The Department of Community Medicine at RLKU Medical College prepares students to understand, measure, and improve population health. Teaching aligns with the UHS curriculum and mapped program learning outcomes, integrating epidemiology, biostatistics, research methods, health promotion, environmental/occupational health, maternal–child health, health systems management, and disaster preparedness.
Learning is case-linked and practice-oriented. Students design surveys, conduct community diagnosis, and apply screening and health-education strategies. Field placements (e.g., visits to primary healthcare facilities and community sites) expose learners to immunization services, disease surveillance concepts, and primary care workflows. Practical components include data collection, analysis and interpretation (using standard statistical tools), development of IEC materials, and audit/quality-improvement mini-projects.
Assessment combines MCQs/SAQs, OSPEs, project reports, and presentations with timely feedback and remediation. Faculty allocation, structured timetables, and SOPs for field safety, ethics, and informed consent underpin all activities. The department collaborates with
internal clinical units and external public-health partners for joint sessions on outbreak investigation drills, antimicrobial stewardship awareness, and health-promotion campaigns.
Through disciplined instruction, community engagement, and data-driven practice, the Department of Community Medicine equips graduates with practical skills in prevention, early detection, and systems thinking—building competence to contribute to primary care, public-health programs, and evidence-based policy.
