Department of Nephrology

At RLKU Medical College’s attached hospitals—HLTH and HLH—Nephrology provides consultant-led kidney care across OPD, emergency liaison, day-care, and inpatient services. HLH hosts a nephrology & dialysis facility with a 12-bedded Centre (dialysis chairs) and ICU bedside dialysis capability. Services span AKI and CKD management, glomerulonephritis workups, hypertension and electrolyte disorders, dialysis care, and renal transplant medicine, supported by integrated diagnostics and multidisciplinary links with ICU/HDU, Radiology, Pathology, Cardiology, Endocrinology, and Nutrition. Care emphasizes standardized pathways, infection prevention, safe prescribing, and audit-driven quality improvement. As a teaching unit, the department aligns with the UHS curriculum and mapped outcomes. Students learn focused renal history/examination; interpretation of urinalysis, creatinine/eGFR, electrolytes, and ABG; AKI staging and CKD classification; fluid, electrolyte, and acid–base principles; indications/contraindications for dialysis; and safe drug dosing in renal impairment. Learning occurs on ward rounds and clinics, with dialysis-unit exposure, case-based discussions, and Skills-Lab sessions (fluid orders, potassium emergencies, dialysis indications, patient counselling). Assessment uses OSCEs, workplace-based tools (DOPS/mini-CEX), case presentations, logbooks, and structured feedback—building safe, systematic, and patient-centered practice.
