A workshop was conducted by the Department of Medical Education RLKUMC on 5th May 2023 with the aim to equip mentors with the necessary skills and knowledge to build strong and effective mentoring relationships with their mentees. The facilitators Prof Faheem Mahmood, Dr Asim Zia and Dr Naureen Omar discussed various aspects of mentoring targeting the given outcomes.
Define the roles and responsibilities of a mentor in medical education.
Identify the qualities of effective mentors.
Explain the difference between a teacher and a mentor.
Provide tools and strategies for building effective mentoring relationships.
Practice the skills needed to be a successful mentor.
The highlight of the workshop was the activity “Difficult Conversations” performed by the participants in response to different common scenarios they could encounter as mentors. A very constructive discussion regarding strategies and tools for building effective mentoring relationships originated as a result of this activity. Pre and post workshop feedback forms were filled.
